It is the distillery that gives birth to the new
spirit, but the chief blender who has the responsibility of guiding
it through the long years to maturity and who ultimately determines
its character. He keeps track of the developing whisky in the
warehouse by regularly calling up samples from each batch. When
it is ready for bottling he selects a mixture of casks that will
maintain the award-winning quality of Aberlour.
It is an essential part of the chief blender's job
to choose the right mix of used bourbon and sherry casks in which
to mature the various whiskies, each making a crucial contribution
to the colour and flavour of the spirit.
His immaculately trained sense of smell enables
him to "nose" his way through the subtle aromas emanating
from countless casks and bottles of malt whisky. The rest is down
to years of experience.
