The 2007 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival took place from the 3rd to the 6th May and was bigger and better than ever. Now in its ninth year the festival offered a familiar line-up of events, embracing live entertainment, arts and crafts, competitions, regional food, scenic attractions and whisky galore to sample and savour.
There were expeditions into Speyside’s spectacular hinterland to soak up the scenery and to see the wildlife. Craft demonstrations included kilt-making and cask-making, and there were photography and art exhibitions to linger over. For those who wanted to learn more about the history of whisky there were smugglers’ trails to follow and exhibits at the Dufftown Whisky Museum to peruse.
A variety of bands and artistes were on hand to perform live music, but most of all there was the whisky to celebrate and enjoy – the true spirit of Speyside.
Aberlour at the Speyside Festival
Once again the Aberlour Distillery Whisky Dinner was one of the highlights of the festival. Co-hosting the evening was French whisky writer and gastronomy expert Martine Nouet and Chivas distilleries manager Alan Winchester, a now familiar double act at the event.
In the charmingly intimate setting of the Fleming Rooms guests sat down to a gourmet meal, each course prepared with and accompanied by a different Aberlour expression. Over the years the Aberlour dinner has attracted visitors from around the world. This year was no exception.
On the Friday and Saturday of the festival Alan Winchester was conducting his personal Masterclass and Tour, another popular annual attraction. No one knows more about Aberlour – the whisky and the place – than Alan, who for many years was the distillery manager there.
