Craigellachie Bridge
Built in 1814, Thomas Telford's bridge across the River Spey at
Craigellachie, a couple of miles from Aberlour, is a magnificent
cast-iron structure and a fine example of the great engineer's
work. Until 1973, when another was erected nearby, Telford's bridge
carried the main road and all its traffic.

Fairy Hill
The small hill behind the Aberlour Distillery, on which there are
a number of historic standing stones - evidence of an ancient Pictish
settlement. Fairy Knowe, as it was originally called, was also thought
to be the haunt of spirits from the Faery Kingdom in pre-Christian
times. |

Further Afield
Slightly further afield is the "Granite City" of Aberdeen
and the so-called capital of the Highlands, Inverness. Both have
a wide range of traditional and cultural attractions. Or you can
go on a monster hunt to Loch Ness, or visit the nearby battlefield
of Culloden, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's hopes and army were savagely
crushed in 1746. |

Highland Games
During the summer months, Highland Games are staged at Aberlour
and other towns in the area. The original purpose of the contest
is thought to have been the selection of the finest and bravest
warriors by clan chiefs. Hence the traditional trials of strength,
such as tossing the caber and the hammer throw, which are still
a feature of the games today. There is sword dancing and track events,
and on the sidelines whisky tastings, cookery competitions, Highland
music and dancing. |

Linn Falls
This impressive waterfall is just a short walk from the Aberlour
Distillery. Also known as Linn of Ruthrie (the word "linn"
means waterfall or the pool into which a waterfall cascades), it
is the River Lour's last fling before it joins the Spey. The Linn
Falls undoubtedly had mystical connotations for the ancient Celts
of these parts. The thickly wooded slopes contain oaks, alders and
rowan trees, all of religious significance to the Druids. Even today
there is an aura of mystery and magic surrounding this beautiful
setting. |
