An Ode to England's Fish & Chips
(with apologies to Robbie Burns)
(Outstanding Entry)
Fairest of gifts pulled from a hot and oily sea,
The battered cod is king for me.
Lesser morsels we'll just leave be,
Burger, kebab and chicken wings,
Not worth the salt we pour so free,
For these are paltry things.
On yesterday's newspaper there you lie,
Tempting all your smooth white flesh to try,
To crunch through coating crisp and dry,
To reach at last,
By golden deep-fry,
The succulent ocean's warm repast.
No knife required, just hands it takes
To pull apart those fishy flakes,
A perfect meal it always makes.
And oh those chips (please not French fries),
My hunger slakes,
As each in ketchup lies.
No need to turn to battered bars,
Of heated chocolate such as Mars,
Nor steam a stomach with sheep's innards.
Our northern friends should think it odd,
And so reject these frightful hazards,
And rather worship cod.
So raise a glass of Aberlour
To praise the name of Scotland's flower
And honour Rabbie Burns' poetic power
But when it's time for food past lips
Then 'tis the hour
For fish and chips.

Ham & Pease Stottie
"A stottie is a traditional north-eastern flat, round bread. Pease pudding is made from the juices left from boiling a ham. You add yellow split peas and simmer it until you are left with a yellow spread. Slice the stottie in half, spread on the pease and add a couple of slices of ham."
