Kincaid's Bayhouse -Burlingame,
CA
Excellent food, excellent views of
San Francisco Bay, and, most important, a very impressive back
bar with dozens of single malts from which to choose. Eat at the
bar and match a malt with each course, or have the bartender put
in your reservation for a table while you sample your favorites.
Very close to S.F. airport if you're just passing through. My
only complaint: the bartender seemed to think that a brandy snifter
was the glass to use for whisky. I insisted on a small white wine
glass as a more appropriate alternative.

Dundee Dell - Omaha, Nebraska
The Dundee Dell has the largest selection
of single malts of any pub in the United States that we know of
- between 350 and 400 (it is growing every day). The Dundee Dell
sponsors tastings once a month of single malts (first Sunday of
each month). The owner, Pat Gobel, also sponsors with the local
ScotchWatch Society distillery tours of Scotland, including a
trip to Aberlour in May 2001 .

Keens Steakhouse - New York
Had a hard day shopping at Macy's?
This New York institution, which opened in 1885, is the perfect
place to rest the feet and clear the head with a malt. A warren
of unevenly floored rooms, clay pipes on the ceiling, wood everywhere,
comfortable bar stools, mutton chops the size of Cadillacs and
150+ malts which can be bought by the glass or by the flight:
islands, Speyside, by distillery etc and at great prices. A slice
of genuine (not ersatz) old-style New York.

Sherlock's Home - Minnetonka
My favourite whisky bar anywhere in
the world. I hate the punning name, but love the pub. Proprietor
Bill Burdick brews his own beers, including a malty Scotch Ale
that reminds me of my youth, and has about 100 malts. Although
its extraordinary array of whiskies makes it a special place,
it has the casual atmosphere of a true pub. I can walk in, join
the regulars half-sitting, slouching or standing at the end of
the bar, and feel I am in my local. You are especially likely
to find me there in late September or early October, when I present
my annual malts-tasting in a marquee on the car park.

Hole In One - New York
Among the convenience stores and pizza
parlours on an anonymous stretch of 2nd Avenue is a door with
an inconspicuous sign announcing "Malt Whisky Club".
Ring, be vetted by a closed-circuit camera, and head upstairs.
Going upstairs to a bar seems wrong. It makes me feel that I am
doing something illicit. That in turn makes the drinks twice as
enjoyable. There is a cover charge; drinks start at $15 a shot,
and the rarest malts nudge $1,000.
Michael Jackson, whisky writer
Not so much a whisky bar as a Zen temple to
the spirit. With a clientele of well-heeled Japanese businessmen
this is a discreet, tranquil haven where people can come to relax
and contemplate the finest of malts. Superb food is on offer,
you can buy your own bottle and all of the world's rarest drams
sit there - tempting you. Over 300 of them. Pricey - VERY pricey
- but simply extraordinary.
