Balgonie Country House Hotel - Ballater
My favourite hotel in the Highlands, with great
food, great conversation and hospitality in the real sense of
the word. Popular with those who have business at Royal Lochnagar
Distillery and Balmoral Castle.

The Archiestown Hotel - Archiestown
The Archiestown Hotel, close to my home in
Speyside and only a few miles from the Aberlour Distillery, offers
an excellent range of Speyside Malts, including several versions
of Aberlour, and some from elsewhere in Scotland. You will be
warmly welcomed by the owners, Jane and Alan, and their
team. Savour a dram beside the open fire in the comfortable sitting
room and listen to the exploits of those who have spent their
day fishing on the Spey, who comprise the majority of the hotel's
residents. The hotel's other strength is its Bistro which features
delicious, fresh local produce, well cooked and served.

The Canny Man's - Edinburgh
A quirky traditional bar owned by the same family since its foundation
in 1870 and stuffed with bric-a-brac. Lists around 250 malts,
some in unusual bottlings. Excellent lunchtime restaurant. My
local. Charles MacLean
My early explorations of distilled malt were
in The Canny Man's, in Morningside, traditionally the poshest
and snobbiest part of Edinburgh. The pub has a reputation for
being picky about its clientele. In retrospect, I am astonished
that I was tolerated as a scruffy 19-year-old who thought he was
Dylan Thomas.

The Mash Tun - Aberlour
Not so much a whisky bar (although they have
some very interesting examples, notably the Aberlour 1972), just
a great local bar - good beer, excellent bar food, friendly staff.
A must if you are visiting the Aberlour Distillery.
Charles MacLean, whisky writer.
There are over 60 single malts available plus
some stunning beers. It's not unusual to find a dozen different
Aberlours available in this excellent pub.

The Quaich Bar - The Craigellachie
Hotel
At the heart of whisky country "The Craig"
is justifiably famous for its whisky bar, The Quaich, where you
can rely on meeting enthusiasts and people in the trade comparing
notes on samples from a list of 410 malts.
Charles MacLean
Simply unparalleled in terms of the range
of malts available. If you find yourself in malt whisky's heartland,
this is the ideal place for a dram or three.

Superior quality bottlings of cask strength

The Grouse Inn - Aberdeenshire
A remote, roadside pub on a minor road connecting
Speyside to Deeside with a large Aberdonian restaurant (plain
fare, huge portions) where the owner challenges you to mention
a whisky he has not got. He has no idea how many he owns - certainly
measured in thousands, most of them sealed and not for drinking.

The Old Course Hotel & Country Club
- Fife
The hotel's whisky bar is on the third floor,
with wonderful views over the famous Old Course and the West Sands
beyond, on the outskirts of "The Home of Golf". Although
the building is very much "international resort" quality,
the bar itself is of the leather-armchair school; the barman is
very knowledgeable and stocks around 300 whiskies.

Opened Aug 01. The Scotsman Hotel has been created out of the
labyrinthine building which formerly housed Scotland's national

bottlings.

The Lochside Hotel - Isle of Islay
The largest collection of Islay whiskies, for
drinking, in the world. Situated on the south shore of Loch Indaal.
Charles MacLean
It's the greatest bar I've ever been lucky
enough to set foot in. I have never seen so many different expressions
before (over 400 single malts). A real "Mecca" for a
malt whisky lover. Not to forget the view over Loch Indaal through
the bar windows.
