This is the time of year when the beautiful Speyside
landscape returns to life after the long winter lay-off. Keen-eyed
birdwatchers are on the lookout once again for the new spring
intake of redwing, brambling, crossbill, goldeneye and, if they
are lucky, the golden eagle, back patrolling the skies above the
Cairngorms. A growing number of climbers and walkers take to the
hills.
Even before the arrival of spring the salmon fishermen
are out in force, wading into the still icy waters of the Spey.
There will be countless servings of Speyside salmon for the many
visitors to the region, a local speciality that truly comes into
its own when accompanied by a glass of Aberlour Single Malt.
Among the first of the fishing fraternity to arrive
is Bill the heron, who each year builds his nest on the banks
of the Lour, a short flight from the Aberlour Distillery. A welcome
sign that spring has come at last.
